Formed in 1946, the Melville Water Polo Club Inc (MWPC) played at Bicton Baths in the the Swan River before moving to the purpose-built pool in 1981 - a result of the hard work, endeavour and sacrifice of its members and supporters. In International Water Polo circles, Bicton Pool is regarded as one of the world’s finest venues and has hosted events on an International scale including:1987: Americas Cup Challenge, 1991 and 1998: FINA World Championships. Melville was one of six clubs which competed in the inaugural Water Polo competition that began in Western Australia in 1946. Training was at Bicton Baths with the majority of games played at Crawley. 
Today, Melville has 14 senior teams and is home to the Fremantle Mariners (men), winners of the 2006 Australian National Water Polo League. It also hosts the Fremantle Marlins (women), winners of the inaugural national title in 2004, thus continuing the club’s outstanding national success. The highly successful Flippa Ball originated at the Melville Water Polo Club. Currently, more than 400 boys and girls play junior Water Polo at Bicton. |
